Great Western Arcade

Great Western Arcade: Past, Present and Future is a site-specific exhibition curated by Birmingham City University’s MA Curating programme, in close collaboration with the management, retailers and residents of the Arcade.

It was a one-day event/exhibition, taking place on 31st March 2016, in which art pieces by six different Midlands based artists were distributed across the Arcade as well as inside specific shops. The nature of the artworks included sculpture, performance, film, installation and projection.

The exhibited artworks relate and respond to various facets which characterise the Great Western Arcade as well as the specific shops where some of the works will be shown. This includes the historical significance of the Arcade; the building’s architecture; the importance of its location as a site of passage and portal between Snow Hill and New Street station; and the proliferation of and support for independent businesses within the arcade.
